Barbora Horáková Joly

Barbora Horáková, born in Prague, studied singing at the music academies in Basel and Geneva. Her studies in opera directing led her to the Bavarian Theatre Academy in Munich. Since 2015 she worked closely with director Calixto Bieito, for whom she has adapted numerous productions throughout Europe.These included From a House of the Dead, Tannhäuser, Britten's War Requiem and Zimmermann's Die Soldaten.
La voix humaine (Poulenc), developed in Neuchâtel, was her first independent production. Horáková catalogue of works expanded rapidly. In Basel she staged L'enfant et les sortilèges, in Neuchâtel Romulus the Great (Pflüger/Willaschek), in Oslo and Basel Pelléas and Mélisande, in Bilbao L'Orfeo (Monteverdi) and Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), in Lyon La bella dormente nel bosco (Respighi), in Heidenheim Verdi's Un giorno di regno, in Wuppertal and London's ENO Luisa Miller, in the Vienna Chamber Opera L'enfant et les sortilèges/Olympia (Ravel/Offenbach), in Dresden Eötvös' The Golden Dragon.
In 2017 she won at the Ring Award in Graz, was Newcomer of the Year 2018 at the "International Opera Awards" and in 2019 was awarded the Spanish theatre prize "Los Premios Ercilla" for the best performance. Since 2019/20, Barbora Horáková has been house director at the Hanover State Opera.
