Tina Lanik grew up in Stuttgart and studied politics at Vienna University. She has directed at the Deutsches Theatre Berlin, at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, the Residence Theatre in Munich, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Since 2014, she has also worked as an opera director at opera houses such as Alte Oper Frankfurt, Staatstheater Nuremberg and Dortmund Theatre. In 2002, she received the Kurt Hübner Directing Prize for her production of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Water Drops on Burning Rocks at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich. In 2003 she was named Young Director of the Year in the critics' poll of the trade journal Theater heute. She directed the world premiere of Nis-Momme Stockmann's The Empire of Beauty in the 2018/19 season at Schauspiel Stuttgart. In 2020/21, she directed the world premiere of both Thomas Melle's The Situation and Seventeen Scenes from the Darkness.
