Klaus-Peter Kehr

Klaus-Peter Kehr, one of the most renowned German opera dramaturgs and festival directors, was opera director at Nationaltheater Mannheim, and during his tenure he established the Mannheim Mozart Summer. After studying in Vienna, Klaus-Peter Kehr primarily worked as a dramaturg. At the Cologne Opera in 1971 his ongoing artistic alliance with director Achim Freyer began. Their Philip Glass trilogy at Staatstheater Stuttgart – Satyagraha (1981), Echnaton (1984) and Einstein on the Beach (1988) – is a milestone in German opera history. In addition to positions at large German opera houses, Klaus-Peter Kehr was responsible for the music theater program at Wiener Festwochen from 1991 to 2002. From 1994 to 2008 he was artistic director of the Schwetzingen Festival. Further, he has taught at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (ABK Stuttgart), University of Vienna, and Hochschule der Künste in Berlin and was Professor of Dramaturgy at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen until 2005.
