Salwa Nakkara*

Salwa Nakkara was born in Haifa, Israel. In 1980, she graduated from the Beit-Zvi School of the Performing Arts, and has since appeared in various theatre, film and television productions in Israel, Palestine and worldwide. Her awards include the Landau Prize for Arts and Science in 2013, one of Israel's most prestigious prizes. She has had leading roles in numerous theatre productions, including The Jerusalem Syndrome by Joshua Sobol, Sea Breeze (directed by Ofira Henig at the Haifa Municipal Theater), The House of Bernarda Alba (directed by Mounir Bakri), Consider by Joshua Sobol (directed by Alon Tiran), Cappuccino in Ramallah by Souad Amiri (directed by Nola Chilton), The Gulf Between Us (written and directed by Trevor Griffiths at The Play House, Leeds), Joseph and his Brothers (directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi at the Young Vic, London), The Trojan Women (directed by Yukio Ninagawa, co-produced by Cameri, at the Theatre of Tel Aviv and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre), Yes, Stand Out Of My Sun, Three Dog Night, and Kind Of (international projects directed by Ofira Henig), The Smartest Guy on Facebook. Status Updates from Syria (directed by Leila Semaan at the Theater Werkstatt Hannover) and Vögel (directed by Itay Tiran at the Burgtheater in Vienna). In addition to her acting work, Nakkara is also a dramaturg and lecturer at the Haifa University Department of Theatre. Nakkara has worked in various cultural contexts and languages for many years, establishing herself as an artist in both Palestinian and Jewish-Israeli circles.
