Juanjo Arqués
Juanjo Arqués is a Spanish choreographer currently living between Amsterdam and Lisbon. Before moving to the Netherlands, he danced with the Ballet Victor Ullate and the English National Ballet. Arqués danced works by renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, David Dawson and Hans van Manen. In 2012, he ended his dance career to devote himself exclusively to choreography. Four years later, he got appointed as a Young Creative Associate by Het National Ballet.
Arqués created most of his works for the Dutch National Ballet and its Junior Ensemble but also for international ballet companies and festivals such as Birmingham Royal Ballet, Theatre Ballet Moscow, Compañia Nacional de Danza and many more. He was named "Promising Talent Of Year 2017" by Dance Magazine for his work Homo Ludens. In 2016 he was nominated for Minos for the prestigious Golden Mask Awards in Moscow as Best Choreographer and for Best Classical Production.
Juanjo Arqués is a versatile choreographer who works not only in dance but also in theatre, film, fashion and performing arts. In 2014, he staged the theatre production Vaslav and Performing Gender, a European dance project on the research themes of identity and sexual orientation at the Mambo Museum in Bologna. He was invited as a guest artist to New York University to research his choreographic vision in dance.
