Paula Klein

Paula Klein was born in Vigo, Spain and grew up in Stuttgart. After graduating from high school, she took up acting studies with John Strasberg in Paris and began her theatre career as an actress in France. In 2008, she expanded her work to include costume design and has since worked freelance mainly for opera and musical productions at various European theatres. Engagements have taken her repeatedly to the Théâtre du Châtelet (including On the Town, Nixon in China, Stephen Sondheim's Passion, 42nd Street, Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion) and the Théâtre Marigny in Paris (Peau d'Âne, Funny Girl) as well as to the Paris Opera (Der Ring des Nibelungen). Further engagements followed at the Semperoper Dresden, the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre and the opera houses in Bilbao, Geneva, Lille, Rouen and Luxembourg.
Paula Klein has worked closely with artists such as Robert Wilson, Stephen Mear, Fanny Ardant and Milena Canonero. She first worked with Calixto Bieito in 2018 and was involved in Bieito's productions in Bilbao (Erresuma), Madrid (The fiery Angel), Zurich (Eliogabalo) and Geneva (War and Peace), among others, as a collaborator of costume designer Ingo Krügler. Most recently, Paula Klein designed the costumes for Bieito's production of the opera Jakob Lenz by Wolfgang Riehm at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Next summer she will also design the costumes for La Resurrezione at the baroque palace in Schwetzingen.
