„A writer is someone who has difficulties with the German language“: Tomer Gardi tells us a rogue's tale, cheeky, with linguistic capers in „Broken German“, an artificial language with unusual spelling, idiosyncratic sentence structure and all but flawless standard German.
The language is played with in a comical and slapstick-like manner, breaking with the conventions of storytelling and questioning the possibility of comprehensive communication: how can it succeed when words, thoughts, people and even dogs suddenly encounter each other in completely different cultural contexts?
This is the beginning of an absurd odyssey in which Tomer's paths lead to ever more mystical situations - a hellish journey through German culture, together with Goethe's Erlkönig and a German shepherd dog called Rex, who meet on a hunt that goes rather wrong. This dark, violent and discombobulated fairy tale, is reflected in the story of the 19th century Indonesian painter Raden Saleh, who travels from Java to Europe. What is left of old Tomer, Rex and Raden at the end? And Nothing Ever Ends reimagines everyday life, while incidentally showing how radical appropriation of language can turn into rebellion.
