Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. The old king has recently passed, supposedly after being bitten by a snake whilst sleeping in the garden. He leaves behind a country in growing conflict with its Norwegian neighbour, a widow who marries her brother-in-law and, amidst all this, his son, the young Prince Hamlet. The news of his father's death tears him away from his studies in Wittenberg and takes him back to his home court in Elsinore. When he is told that the ghost of the deceased king appears night after night on the castle’s ramparts, he seeks him out in hopes of uncovering the true circumstances of his death. Murdered by his brother Claudius, Hamlet's stepfather and heir to the throne, the ghost calls on his son to take revenge. Deeply distraught, Hamlet decides to feign madness in order to escape the suspicion of his family and the court. Polonius, confidant of the new King Claudius, initially suspects that the reason for Hamlet's madness is his love for his daughter Ophelia. While Hamlet does everything in his power to prove his stepfather's guilt, the royal couple start preying on the prince. In the struggle between investigation and cover-up, the plot thickens as the characters one by one are entangled in the deadly web of intrigue.
