Amanda Wingfield, a woman battered by fate, lives in poverty under the same roof as her adult daughter Laura and her son Tom. When Tom spontaneously invites his colleague Jim round for dinner, Amanda hopes for a change in her bleak circumstances and does everything she can to set Laura up with Jim.
