For the two of them it's like a game. Well, almost. The academic couple George and Martha engage in it over and over again, only over time they seem to have forgotten its objective. It does not seem suitable for company either, as it quickly becomes apparent when young biology professor Nick and his wife Honey are drawn into it one night. The opponent is spared no embarrassment, no exposure, one insult follows the next – a marital dispute of extraordinary proportions topping off an already lengthy, alcohol-soaked evening. It's after two o'clock when George and Martha stumble into their flat from a university party and she tells him she's still expecting company. Just one last warning George manages to give her before the doorbell rings: not to mention their son under any circumstances. The night flows by, alcohol is poured, the cutting anecdotes pile up, fact and fiction become blurred in the battle for the biggest humiliation of the partner. Nick and Honey quickly go from being onlookers to involuntary players, until all illusion is shattered and a new day begins to dawn.
Edward Albee's drama from 1962 has long since established itself as a modern classic. It relentlessly portrays the fate of a couple caught between bitter reality and delusions – a dilemma of topicality far beyond the spheres of partnership.
