Calixto Bieito

Catalan director Calixto Bieito was artistic director of the Teatre Romea in Barcelona from 1999 to 2009, and of the FACYL in Salamanca from 2010 to 2012. He works regularly at European opera houses such as the National Opera London, the Paris Opera, the Dutch National Opera, Opera Stuttgart, the Munich Opera, the Zurich Opera House and the Komische Oper Berlin. As a director of drama, he has staged productions for the Edinburgh International Festival, the Munich Residence Theatre, the Mannheim National Theatre and the Bergen Festival in Norway, among others. Bieito received the European Culture Prize in 2009 from the Basel-based cultural foundation Pro Europa, and in 2012 he was awarded the Italian Franco Abbiati Prize. He was awarded the 2014 Spanish opera prize 'Premios Líricos Campoamor' in Oviedo. Since 2017, he has been the artistic director of the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao. In the 2018/19 season, he staged The House of Bernarda Alba at Schauspiel Stuttgart. This was followed by the 2020/21 production of Ödön von Horváth's Italian Night.
