Anja Rabes

Anja Rabes, costume designer, was born in Munich in 1966. After an apprenticeship as a tailor at the Bavarian State Opera, she studied dramatics for a few semesters before working as an assistant to Anna Viebrock, Axel Manthey and Johannes Grützke at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Münchner Kammerspiele. She realised her first own costume designs for dance theatre productions by Verena Weiss and Carolyn Carlson. Since 1994 she has worked regularly as a costume designer for plays and opera with directors such as Jossi Wieler, Stephan Kimmig and Anselm Weber. With Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito she realised the Mozart/da Ponte cycle in Amsterdam in 2006, and in 2008 she designed the costumes for Wieler/Morabito's production of Rusalka at the Salzburg Festival. At the Bavarian State Opera in 2009 she designed the costumes for Don Giovanni directed by Stephan Kimmig. Anja Rabes has also worked as a stage designer since 2002. She created stage and costumes for Wieler's productions Mittagswende, invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, for the world premiere of Elfriede Jelinek's Rechnitz (Der Würgeengel) at the Münchner Kammerspiele as well as for Das letzte Band/Bis dass der Tod euch scheidet oder eine Frage des Lichts (Beckett/Handke) and Angst (Zweig) at the Salzburg Festival. Anja Rabes was a guest lecturer in the scenography class at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe and also taught at the Hochschule für Theater und Musik in Hamburg. At the Staatstheater Stuttgart, she most recently developed the costume design for Ehen in Philippsburg at the Schauspiel, as well as for the opera production Das Reihngold.
