Stephan Kimmig

Stephan Kimmig was born in Stuttgart in 1959. After completing his acting training at the Neue Münchner Schauspielschule he worked as an assistant director at the Schillertheater in Berlin. During the 1980s he lived in the Netherlands, where he directed his own first productions. In 1991 Friedrich Schirmer hired him as director at the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg. From 1996 to 1998 he was in-house director at the Heidelberg Theatre, and from 1998 to 2000 he followed Friedrich Schirmer as in-house director at the Staatsschauspiel Stuttgart. He went on to direct productions at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Vienna Burgtheater, the Schauspiel Frankfurt and the Thalia Theater Hamburg under the direction of Ulrich Khuon, with whom Kimmig moved to the Deutsches Theater Berlin as in-house director in 2009.
Kimmig was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen with his production of Thyestes at the Staatstheater Stuttgart (2002) as well as Nora (2003) and Maria Stuart (2007), both at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. In 2004 he was awarded the Nestroy Prize for Best Director and received the FAUST Theatre Prize in 2007 and 2011. In 2009 he made his opera debut with Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. At Schauspiel Stuttgart, he most recently directed Ehen in Philippsburg based on the novel by Martin Walser and Faust I. Stephan Kimmig made his debut at the Stuttgart State Opera in 2018/19 with the new production of Der Prinz von Homburg. His production of Faust I at Schauspiel Stuttgart renewed in the 2019/20 season.
