Sebastian Blomberg was born in Bergisch Gladbach and studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. He first worked as a member of the ensemble at Theater Basel and Schauspielhaus Vienna before, from 2001 onward, appearing in Berlin at the Deutsches Theater, Maxim Gorki Theater, and Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, as well as at Thalia Theater Hamburg, Burgtheater Vienna, and Schauspielhaus Zurich. He has worked with directors such as Stefan Bachmann, Dimiter Gotscheff, Karin Beier, Martin Kušej, and Nicolas Stemann.
From 2011, Sebastian Blomberg was a member of the ensemble at the Residenztheater Munich, where he appeared in, among others, Herbert Fritsch’s production of Goldoni’s Trilogy of Summer Retreat and Dimiter Gotscheff’s staging of Heiner Müller’s Cement. The production was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2014. In 2017/18, he returned to the Burgtheater Vienna in Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, again directed by Herbert Fritsch. From 2020, he appeared in Karin Beier’s production of Rainald Goetz’s Reich des Todes at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg.
In addition to his theatre work, Sebastian Blomberg has appeared in numerous award-winning film and television productions. In 1997 he was awarded the Josef Kainz Medal of the City of Vienna as “Best Young Actor of the Year.” For his performance in Good Morning, Mr. Grothe (dir. Lars Kraume), he received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2008; in 2014 he was awarded the Günter Rohrbach Film Prize for his role in Age of Cannibals.
In the 2023/24 season he appeared at Schauspiel Stuttgart in Herbert Fritsch’s world premiere staging of Nis-Momme Stockmann’s The Portal. After Karamasow (2014), Infinite Jest (2018), and Verrückt nach Trost (2022), he is once again working with Thorsten Lensing in Dancing Idiots (2026).
